1: Introduction
This checklist is a support tool for trainers, facilitators or organisers of training sessions. It can be used to check whether you have addressed the key elements to make the training a success. It takes into account, for example, elements regarding intersectionality, youth participation, SRHR, sensitive issues and safety, as well as accessibility for people with impairments. There is also a template for a learning needs assessment that should be sent to the participants beforehand. These preconditions help you to create a favourable learning environment where participants feel valued and listened to.
2: Preparing for successful training
A good training session that has impact on practices in the field is a complex event. The location, invitation, information, trainer, learning methods and many more elements will contribute to its success. In the context in which we work, with vulnerable target groups such as intersectional youth, as well as sensitive subjects such as SRHR-related topics, careful preparation is key. This will make it possible for everyone attending to fully participate, and to learn in a relaxing environment without any stress. The checklist helps you to keep track of all the elements involved in successful training.
3: How to use the checklist
The checklist has three sections: ‘before the training’, ‘training content’, and ‘after the training’. It is advisable to start using the list from the moment you know the training will take place. Just gradually fill in the boxes, starting with ‘before the training’ – the most important stage in the process to guarantee the quality of the training course. This is when you still have plenty of time to consider, organise and develop everything you need. For each separate element you can add notes or additional explanations. If a box cannot yet be ticked, it is definitely advisable to note down why that is the case.
During the training course, the checklist can help you keep track of whether you’ve provided all the conditions for full participation of the attendees, and small adjustments can be made. If the training covers several days, going through the ‘during the training’ section is a good ‘end-of-day’ exercise. It will help you to see what you can do better the next day. Finally, you can use the list to evaluate yourself and prepare for future training. What did you learn from this process?
